Answers to the most common web design-related questions

The short answer: Website development costs vary widely, ranging from a few hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands. Key factors include the size and complexity of the website, the experience and location of the developer or team, and the features required.

For example, a simple single-page website built by a freelancer in a non-US country might cost as little as $200. On the other hand, a complex platform like Amazon would cost several hundreds of thousands, if not millions, to develop.

The longer, better answer: Instead of asking “How much will it cost to build my specific website?”, we encourage you to consider, “How much should I invest to get the website I need—on time, with minimal stress, and done right the first time?”

Many clients come to us after facing issues with cheaper options that seemed appealing at first but ended up being costly in terms of time, money, and frustration. Choosing the right team, and a realistic budget from the start can save you from these setbacks.

As an experienced website design & development company based in Louisville, KY, we can recommend an appropriate budget based on the needs of your business and website.

To help you make an informed decision, we offer a free 20-30 minute introductory call. During this call, we’ll learn about your goals, ask the right questions, and provide a tailored estimate for your website project.

A 5-10 page business “brochure” website typically takes around 30 days to complete, while a more complex e-commerce or LMS website could take between 60-120 days. The time required to build a website varies depending on the complexity and size of the website, as well as how responsive and available our clients are throughout the process to provide us with content, feedback, approvals, and payment. We assess the specific requirements of each project and provide you with a timeline in our proposal.

Website buildouts are priced per project as a one-time fee, while web hosting and support are paid on a recurring annual or monthly basis.

For website project, we typically require a 50% upfront payment of the project fee, and then the remaining 50% just prior to launch.

Web hosting is a service that stores and maintains a website’s files and applications on a server, making them accessible to the public over the internet. Every website requires web hosting.

We highly recommend you host your website with us, though we don’t require it. Our hosting comes with all the features and support you need, including things like SSL certificates, nightly backups, and malware monitoring.

If you decide to host the website on your own, we are happy to recommend a solution, but you and your web host will always be responsible for troubleshooting issues related to your server. We typically don’t recommend going this route unless you have a technically-inclined person on your team.

Yes! Unlike many web development companies, we don’t believe you should have to come to us for every change or update you need. Upon completion of your website buildout and receipt of full payment, you will receive ownership and full administrative access to your website.

We build your website with user-friendly tools and will even train your team on how to update various parts of the website during a live, virtual training session.

Yes. In addition to web hosting, we also offer support retainers for any changes, updates, and technical support you may need.

You may also use your support retainer for additional training for staff.

During our introductory call, we can recommend a support plan based on your anticipated needs, and can always adjust later if needed.

As a service to our existing clients, we do not support websites that we did not build. See the next Q&A for more info.

If we didn’t build your website, we typically cannot offer support. Our support services are reserved exclusively for websites we’ve created, ensuring we can fully dedicate our resources to the clients who entrusted us with their projects.

This policy allows us to better serve our clients and uphold the quality of our work.

If you’re considering a redesign of your existing website, we’d be happy to discuss how we can help, and would encourage you to book a call. If you’re reaching out because you’re unable to contact your previous developer, we recommend seeking ad-hoc support from a highly rated developer on platforms like upwork.com.

At Matthews Design, we almost exclusively design and develop websites in WordPress, with the exception of e-commerce websites that we often build on the Shopify platform. WordPress dominates the web, powering over 40% of all websites. The platform offers the flexibility, scalability, ease-of-use, and features that make it an easy choice for a majority of our clients.

Owning a WordPress website is comparable to owning a home, in that you own it (and are responsible for it).

Other website platforms essentially “rent” you your website, and take care of the maintenance, which can be of benefit to new/small businesses or do-it-yourselfers, but isn’t usually the best choice (in our professional opinion) for established businesses.

We can not work in DIY platforms such as Squarespace, WIX, Weebly, etc.

Upon completion and full payment of your project, you will completely own the work/website we develop for you! You will have full control, ownership, and rights over all the files, content, and design elements.

Except for in very rare cases, you should never settle for anything other than full ownership of your website.

Yes, we offer search engine optimization (SEO) services to help improve the visibility and ranking of your website in search engine results. Our team is experienced in implementing SEO best practices, including keyword research, on-page optimization, technical SEO, and content optimization. We include a one-time on-page optimization with every website project.

However, it’s important to note that SEO is an ongoing process, and it may take time to see significant results depending on the competitiveness of your industry and the current state of your website. If you are interested in on-going SEO optimization, just ask, we have a solution for you.

It typically takes 1 to 2 weeks for a new website to show up on Google, but the timeline can vary depending on factors like site structure, quality, and backlinks. When we build websites, we ensure they’re optimized for search engines, mobile-friendly, and secure (HTTPS) to help Google discover them faster.

We also submit the site through Google Search Console and provide an XML sitemap to speed up the indexing process. If your site isn’t appearing after a few weeks, we’ll check for potential issues, like blocked crawlers or SEO settings, to ensure everything is set up for success.
